How to install a ground anchor

How to install and fit a motorcycle ground anchor

Below (courtesy of Oxford Products) we are featuring a short video that will show you how to fit a theft prevention motorcycle ground anchor.

A steel ground anchor is one of the best ways to increase security at your Sheffield home and help prevent the theft of your motorbike.

The same installation method is used for most makes and brands of steel ground anchor units that can be bought in Sheffield - as well as throughout the UK.

The video above shows you how to fit one of these security devices and takes you step-by-step through the procedure needed to mount one on a concrete floor. This could be a concrete floor that is within your garage, on a concrete path or driveway, a patio area in your garden, or a hard surface area that is elsewhere at your Sheffield home.

In addition to the purchase of a motorcycle ground anchor you will need access to the following:
  • An electric hammer drill, ideally a sds type one
  • Several ground anchor bolts (these are usually supplied with your security anchor)
  • A tape measure or ruler
  • A marker pen - ideally black or blue in colour
  • 2 masonry drill bits - one for drilling a pilot hole, one for drilling the mounting hole
  • A spanner or allen key wrench to suit the anchor bolts
  • Last, a pair of safety goggles, a dust mask, and protective gloves
Instead of writing a comprehensive article here on how to install a motorcycle ground anchor - we will refer you to viewing the video. Although this features a very heavy duty "Oxford" model of anchor, the same applies to 99% of other "bolt-down" ground anchors.

Can these items be used to secure all makes of motorcycle?

Yes, you can use one of these products to help prevent the theft of motorbikes including those manufactured by AJS, BMW, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Lambretta, Moto Guzzi, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph, Vespa, and Yamaha. If your particular make is not featured - please do not think anything untoward, it will fit 99% of motorcycles that are sold within the UK.

Do you need to use a security chain with one of these products?

You need to use a heavy duty chain and lock with one of these ground anchors. The chain needs to be fastened around your bike in a place where it can then be passed through the loop on the anchor point.

Can a ground anchor be used with a motorcycle that has shaft drive?

Yes, even large shaft driven bikes such as BMW's and Yamaha FJR1300's can be secured with a strong ground anchor.

Can mopeds and learner legal scooters use a ground anchor?

Providing there is an area where you can loop a chain through - any scooter or moped can use a security anchor, as well as your moped or scooter this includes bikes of a low engine capacity such as a CBF125 or a R125.

Can a steel ground anchor be used with a large muscle bike such as a Honda CB1300 or Z1000?

Yes, you are fine with any of these including the CB1300, Z1000, Suzuki Bandit, and XJR1300 too.

Do you really need a sds type hammer drill to install one of these products?

Not always - but we recommend it. Some motorcycle security ground anchor units require holes to be drilled that are around 16mm diameter in size. Whilst a sdsplus hammer drill will easily cope with these sizes a "standard" electric hammer drill won't (most standard electric drills have a maximum capacity of 10 or 13mm) - hence our recommendation to use a heavy duty sds drill. ** Please note - if needed you could rent one of these tools from a local Sheffield tool hire shop!

Can one of these accessories help reduce my yearly motorcycle insurance premium?

If the model that you buy is recognised and of value to your insurance company - then yes, it can help lower the price of your motorbike insurance. If this is of importance to you it would be best to check with your insurance company first to see which models are on their "approved" list.
